Maryfield was represented with distinction at the recent Celtic Schools' International in Cardiff. Sarah McCarthy of 3K captained the Irish schoolgirls' athletics team to victory and won the "Athlete of the Meet" award for her efforts. Indeed, her sportsbag was stuffed full of medals and trophies on the flight home due to the fact she won her long jump, 200m and relay events. Sarah jumped a new national age group record of 5.71 metres (the fourth best performance by an Irish woman of any age this year), ran an impressive 25.89 seconds in the 200m (the seventh best performance of an Irish woman of any age this year) and anchored the 4 x 200m relay to victory with a time of 1.44.63. The Irish team beat second place Wales by 99 points to 83. Congratulations Sarah!
Sarah also picked up a gold medal in the Ulster Indoor long jump championship in Belfast this February. Ex pupils Susan Scallon (fourth in the senior women's 400m) and Shawna Furman (60m hurdles) also flew the flag for Maryfield athletics that day.

Swimming
Wendy O'Neill of 5K is an extremely successful swimmer and has represented Ireland on numerous occasions, winning several trophies in the process. One such trophy is on display in the school reception area. She is a hopeful for the 2012 Olympics in London. She won the Irish Open Championship 200m back stroke with a time of 2.21.61S and the 1,500m free style with a time of 17:35.66S along with numerous other titles, including relays. Ex-Maryfield pupil, Gillian Gavaghan is one of Wendy's arch rivals.

Badminton
1K's Ailbhe Fusco (photo) has enjoyed a lot of success playing badminton. After a brilliant performance in the Victor Leinster Christmas Juvenile Close, she regularly represents her province both individually and in mixed doubles with her partner Noel Dunne from New Ross. She also captained the Maryfield U-14 A team (consisting of Katie Smith, Hannah Moloney and Karla Mc Mahon) to victory in the Dublin championship today (the 25th of February). The girls will play at Leinster level next Tuesday.

Basketball
The minor A and junior A teams have qualified for the Dublin championship final in March. The first years beat Santa Sabina by five points in their semi before the second years defeated Manor House by four. Best of luck to both teams!

Camogie
The junior camogie team trounced arch rivals St. Dominic's, Cabra by 13 points in the Dublin championship quarter finals last Tuesday. Well done girls! Their senior counterparts narrowly lost their own quarter final to St. Joseph's, Lucan by one point. The girls were unlucky to be missing five players who also play for Dublin. They will now play in the Dublin Shield, a competition they will hope to win.
