INTRODUCTION:

Parents have always been encouraged to play a very active part in the life of Maryfield and an active Parents' Association has existed for many years.   The Association plays an important part in the successful running of the school and acts as a formal channel of communication between the school and the parents.   We hold meetings on topics of educational interest to parents and we support the work of the school in many other ways.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To seek to represent the views of parents and guardians.

  • To consult and inform parents regarding school policy and plans.

  • To promote good relations and cooperation between the parents, teachers and pupils.

  • To provide a forum for discussion and consultation on matters of mutual concern to parents, teachers and pupils.

  • To promote the Christian message in the lives of parents, pupils and teachers.

  • To promote the role of parents and guardians as the prime educators of their children.

  • To support and organize activities in support of the school.

Activities:

The Parents Association have hosted many beneficial Information evenings for parents, dealing with issues such as drug awareness and we support the annual 'Cheese & Wine' night for the parents of 1 st years.  We have also been involved in supporting music evenings, the Art competition and other events.

The Association have been actively involved in drafting of policies, such as the College Code of Conduct.

Events:

A very successful annual general meeting was held on 25th October 2006

The guest speaker was John Lonergan, Governor Mountjoy Prison.

News:

The vacancy for a Parents' Representative on the Board of Management was filled at the AGM.  The Parents' Reps are Gerry Kerr and David Madden.

Fundraising:

The annual €15 contribution from parents provides the bulk of funding.  From time to time, we organise events, such as quiz nights, to bolster the funds.

Over the last few years, funds raised by the Parents Association have been allocated to:

o        New sports kits for Basketball, Athletics, etc

o        Goalposts for the Camogie pitch

o        Various materials and contributions to the Arts, Music   and Religion Departments

o        Study skills

The main assistance to the school in the recent past has been our contributions towards the new audio-visual equipment in the school hall - see below.    Other funding items for 2007 will be agreed at Parent Association meeting during the year.

Recent news:

In September 2006 we raised over €7,000 thanks to the generous Parents Donations.  We also held a Quiz night in March 2006 which raised a further €1,373 towards our funds.

The major project in the school this year was the purchase and installation of a 'state of the art' DVD/ Audio System in the Assembly Hall.  The overall cost of this was approximately €13,000 towards which the Parents Association made a significant contribution. The "Maryfield Plex" is much appreciated by both staff and pupils alike.

In addition to these various projects we also made monies available to the various Departments in the school to aid in the purchase of materials and equipment, such as, TV's, DVD Players, Globes, Posters, Books, CD's etc.   This project is also ongoing and will require our further assistance next year.

Membership & Meetings:

All parents / guardians of pupils attending Maryfield College are automatically members of the Parents' Association

The annual general meeting of the Association is normally held in October and at this meeting a committee is elected each year to co-ordinate the activities of the Parents' Association.

Two parents also represent the parent body on The Board of Management.

Our Treasurer is Valerie Hehir and our Secretary is Kerrie Caulfield.

Our current Chairperson is Mary Ryan.
